Abstract

This research project aimed to investigate the financial reality of FADBA’s young university students; the work highlighted the growing importance of financial education, particularly for young people who are beginning their adult lives. The problem is more evident in low-income university communities, where many face challenges without adequate access to financial resources, for example. The research uses data from PEIC (2019) to illustrate the worrying rate of debt among Brazilian families and highlights student debt, evidencing the lack of adequate guidance. The research focused on the main financial challenges faced by young university students at Faculdade Adventista da Bahia, located in Capoeiruçú, district of Cachoeira/BA, with the objective of identifying financial problems and proposing strategies to solve them; the research highlighted the relevance of the topic, especially for young people with some financial vulnerability and susceptible to facing problems of this nature – which in turn, have the potential to generate other problems. The data reveal a high rate of lack of financial knowledge among students; The graphs presented reveal the budgetary situation of students, showing that more than half of them face financial difficulties, with a considerable portion spending more than they earn. Although most recognize that their finances are out of control, many do not seek ways to resolve this situation. Ideally, these students would be able to not only create and develop better living conditions, but also to think about investments, since the ability to recognize good investments and make good financial decisions significantly impacts the well-being of families. In the end, the work emphasizes the need for effective interventions in financial education for young university students at FADBA. Tools already developed by others, such as the website "Meu Bolso Feliz" and the app "Organizze" are proposals and/or promising strategies to address these challenges; the combination of these tools, combined with awareness and ongoing study on the importance of financial education, represents a significant step towards a more stable, conscious and financially balanced future for this community.
