This study presents the school trajectories of students enrolled in Youth and Adult Education (EJA) at a municipal public school in Lavras, in 2026. It sought to identify the reasons for school dropout, as well as to describe the difficulties faced upon returning to schooling, analyze students’ perceptions of the learning process, and discuss their expectations regarding the aforementioned educational modality. This is a qualitative, descriptive study, whose procedures involved the application of questionnaires and the interpretative analysis of the data obtained. These data, in turn, were safeguarded in accordance with the ethical principles governing research involving human beings in Brazil. The results showed that interruption and return to schooling in EJA are multifactorial phenomena, influenced by social, economic, and family conditions. In addition, it was found that welcoming pedagogical practices favor school retention and academic success, contributing to reflections on teacher education and more inclusive pedagogical practices. It is concluded, therefore, that these trajectories are marked by interruptions resulting from the demands and population profiles that characterize this educational modality.
