Introduction: The topic of this article is depression in elderly people facing family abandonment in long-term care institutions. Here, we question the main consequences on the emotional health of elderly people due to family abandonment. Objective: To analyze the main aspects of depression in abandoned elderly people in long-term care institutions. As specific objectives, this work seeks to understand the most common signs and symptoms of depression in institutionalized elderly people and to describe the incidence and psychological and behavioral effects of depression in elderly people in these conditions. Methodology: This is a narrative literature review. Scientific articles were searched on the Google Scholar platform using the keywords "depression", "long-term care institutions", and "family abandonment", certified in the Health Sciences Descriptors (DECS). Articles published between 2018 and 2023 were used. Conclusion: The present study suggests that the institutionalization process enhances the development of depression in the elderly. This hypothesis is confirmed by the signs and symptoms that manifest in the act of family abandonment in Long-Term Care Institutions for the Elderly.
