Objective: To know reasons associated with the search for growth and development follow-up consultations with doctors or nurses. Method: Qualitative research conducted with 32 mothers of children under one year old, living in Afro-descendant communities of Ilha de Maré, Bahia, Brazil. The data were systematized through the analysis of thematic content and guided by the theory of Symbolic Interactionism. Results: The reasons associated with the search for growth and development follow-up visits with physicians are due to the fact that they are pediatricians, have the competence to prescribe medication, lack of knowledge of the nursing consultation, and referral directed by the nurse. Factors related to the option of consulting the nurse refer to the fact that she is attentive or when she can not schedule an appointment with the doctor. Conclusion: The reasons for the search for the professional nurse or doctor are influenced by the interaction established in the community. The medical preference is associated with a hypervaluation of this profession and is related to the biomedical / technocratic model, which reinforces the need for prescription drugs. The preference for the nurse is anchored in the interaction established, based on empathy, bonding and acceptance.
