Abstract

Introduction: The torus is a type of exostosis in which there is a benign, slow, progressive bone hyperplastic growth covered by poorly vascularized thin mucosa. Its etiology is multifactorial and includes genetic and epigenetic factors. The prevalence varies in population studies ranging from 0.4% to 66.5% for the palatine torus and 0.5 to 63.4% for the mandibular torus. Although it is asymptomatic in some individuals, there are studies showing the presence of torus associated with occlusal stress and interference in the stomatognathic system. Objective: to identify the prevalence of mandibular and palatal torus in the black population of the Recôncavo Baiano. Methodology: this is a field, observational, cross-sectional, quantitative, descriptive study. 425 individuals from the Recôncavo region of Bahia participated in this research. The individuals were informed and invited to participate in the research, which was approved by the Ethics Committee of Faculdade Adventista da Bahia, according to CAAE 4556221.4.0000.0042. The presence of mandibular or palatal tori was determined through an intraoral clinical examination and inspection through palpation and the location and amount of bone exostoses were evaluated. Results: There is a percentage of 12.7% with presence of torus in the study population, with a total of 54 subjects, most of which for mandibular torus in 41 individuals (75.92%), 19 participants (35 .18%) with palatine torus and 6 subjects (11.11%) with double torus. Conclusion: In our study, there was a higher incidence of mandibular torus when compared to palatine torus and a slightly more pronounced predilection for females. Surveys like this are important to quantify the prevalence in a population that has never been studied, in order to make individuals aware of their health condition and show appropriate forms of treatment to thus offer a better quality of life.
