STUDY OF THE ANXIOLYTIC EFFECT OF Coriandrum sativum L. IN THE ELEVATED CROSS LABYRINTH BY GAVAGE

Anxiety is a common experience and becomes pathological when it is an inadequate response due to its intensity and duration. To control it in Brazil, the most used anxiolytic drugs are benzodiazepines, but they bring unwanted effects, therefore, it is important to research that evidence other treatments. Coriandrum sativum L. has been recommended for the relief of anxiety and insomnia in Iranian folk medicine. The aim of this study is to examine whether the aqueous extract of Coriandrum sativum L. seed will have an anxiolytic effect in mice by gavage. The test methodology followed the qualitative and quantitative experimental model, using 29 Swiss mice in two groups, with the control (n = 14) treated with 0.9% saline solution and the test (n = 15) treated with an aqueous solution of Coriandrum sativum L., 200 mg/kg. The solutions were administered orally by gavage in all groups, using the elevated plus maze to verify such effects. The experiment was carried out between 1 pm and 7 pm, recorded with a 14 megapixel camera. Quantitative data were descriptively analyzed using BioEstat 5.0 and hypotheses tested using the Mann-Whitney test. The anxiolytic activity of the aqueous extract of Coriandrum sativum L. administered by gavage could be demonstrated by the present study (p = 0.01).
