Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background: The International Continence Society (ICS) defines urinary incontinence (UI) as any involuntary loss of urine, being a multifactorial condition of its origin. Objectives: Demonstrate the role of primary care in preventing female UI. Aim: Demonstrate the role of primary care in preventing female UI. Methods: A literature review was carried out that included studies that discussed the impact of primary care in preventing female UI in the last 10 years (2009 to 2019). The databases consulted were PubMed, PEDro, Scielo and Cochrane Library, using the search terms “urinary incontinence”, “primary health care” and “prevention”. Results: Ten studies were selected for review. The total sample size ranged from 01 to 1000 women. The age range studied was from 23 to 65 years. Most studies demonstrate that pelvic floor muscle training (TMAP) programs for women with UI have achieved significant results. Preventive educational programs such as correct teaching of TMAP, moderate regimens of combined physical exercise, counseling to change habits, proper management during pregnancy and labor can prevent damage to the pelvic floor muscles and, consequently, UI. Conclusion: This study showed significant results of primary care in the prevention of female UI, although the findings in the scientific literature are still scarce. Therefore, it suggests the importance of new scientific research so that more defined and precise conclusions can be obtained regarding the effectiveness and benefits of primary care for women's health and guaranteeing a better quality of life.
